The 22 artists participating in this exhibition still work professionally. They are different in terms of their styles of visualization. They work with realistic, abstract, naïve-decorative, and mixed styles.

However, if observed further, these 22 artists have similarity in choosing topics and developing ideas. They are all inspired and influenced by the social and environmental condition in their respective surroundings. The artists, from the oldest (Edhi Sunarso, 62 years old) to the youngest (Sigit Raharjo, 34) are those still taking social condition as a stepping stone to depart with their works. It means in this exhibition the unending social and environmental issues in particular become the general topics.

They use social issues as subjects of their visualization as well as instruments or foundation to discuss certain things that are unnecessarily visualized. The issues raised are among other independence and nationalism, overcrowded Jakarta and quiet village, culture and urban people, writing culture, religion and lifestyle, gender and reproduction, politics, etc. These themes provide us with access to understand the uniqueness of each artist.

Social issues as themes in visual art have begun since the early 20th century in Europe. In Indonesia such movement was firstly marked by the emergence of Persagi (The Union of Indonesian Draftsmen) with its leading painters such as Agus Djaja and Sudjojono in the last decade of 1930s. Nowadays any socio-political issue as ground idea in visual art is not a new thing. In fact, it can be said that issues concerning the recent social and political situations are the easiest themes to be painted. They are far easier than ideas related to formalism, which accentuate the formal elements of painting like line, dot and color only.

More or less, the social, cultural, political issues in this exhibition can be considered as doorways to enter into the understanding of the works being exhibited.
